Micro but mighty: micro-credentials for a recovering hospitality industry

This project will benefit a devastated hospitality industry by allowing for immediate recognition of the skills that will drive recovery. In partnership with industry, we will develop a catalogue of 22 to 25 micro-credentials that validate individual in-demand skills and core competencies, like customer service and team leadership. These certifications can then be used in conjunction with each other to demonstrate overall proficiency in key skill areas. The Hospitality Workers Training Centre (HWTC) will work alongside project partner Bow Valley College to engage sector input, identify and validate the core skills and competencies, and prepare 350 to 400 vulnerable and displaced hospitality workers for recovery.

Future Skills Centre is investing $582,083 in this 2-year project. These micro-credentials will assist displaced workers as they navigate a competitive and rapidly evolving job market by offering them an accessible certification process. It will also enable program graduates to leverage and build their skills portfolio and signal their relevant skills to employers. Employers can easily recognize the attainment of in-demand skills and ensure that employees are prepared to support business priorities. Working alongside employers to develop demand-driven and attainable skills development/recognition opportunities for the sector’s impacted workers will be critical to Ontario’s economic recovery.
