L&#8217;un des d\u00e9fis dans la synth\u00e8se des recherches sur le sujet de la culture num\u00e9rique est le grand nombre de sources, ainsi que le fait que le concept intersecte avec beaucoup d&#8217;autres, comme la pens\u00e9e de calcul, de codage, e-alphab\u00e9tisation, l&#8217;\u00e9ducation aux m\u00e9dias, les comp\u00e9tences en TIC, STEM, et ainsi de suite. L&#8217;absence d&#8217;une seule d\u00e9finition commune du concept implique que les sources ont vari\u00e9 conceptions du terme \u00ab alphab\u00e9tisation num\u00e9rique \u00bb lui-m\u00eame. Une grande partie du travail a \u00e9t\u00e9 cit\u00e9 relativement r\u00e9cente, \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 que le concept de la culture num\u00e9rique est devenu plus fr\u00e9quemment utilis\u00e9 depuis environ 2009, et que le sens du concept a chang\u00e9 au fil du temps.
